| Paul, an executive who never lost touch with the steelworkers he cared so much about, died on April 27, 2001. He battled cancer with the same vengeance he unleashed on unfair trade practices that threatened "his" industry. "Paul was a people-oriented and visionary leader of U. S. Steel," said Tom Usher, US Steel Corporation's Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of its Board of Directors.
| "He began his career as a turn foreman at the National Plant in McKeesport, Pa., in 1964 and rose through the ranks to the top of the company." In 1994, he became Vice President of Operations for U. S. Steel and was President later that year.
Paul graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in mechanical engineering and was very active in community affairs. He was Chairman of the Board of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America and received the Boy Scouts' Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor they bestow to volunteer leaders. Mars Home for Youth was Paul's charity of choice in the North Hills. "Paul was a man full of life," said Tom Usher.
